Dear HKU Class of 90s and Friends, 

 Over the past two weeks, people from Hong Kong and the rest of the world have responded swiftly to the Sichuan Earthquake in lending their helping hands to rescue efforts.  According to official figures released on May 25, 62,664 are confirmed dead and 358,816 injured, with 23,775 listed as missing.

 The devastating earthquake left about 4.8 million people homeless, and the number could be as high as11 million. The Chinese Central Government and NGOs are doing their best now to build temporary housing and tents for the homeless and it is estimated that they will need to stay in temporary housing or tents for at least 6 months while re-building efforts is making its progress. The disaster areas continue to need tents, medical supplies, drinking water and food. Hopefully broken houses and schools can be re-built soon, but we all know it well enough that broken hearts will take forever to heal.

 Referring to the recent call for support by HKU (www.hku.hk/chinaearthquake/), I would like to urge that we continue to show support to victims in Sichuan.   The reconstruction of new houses, schools and other infrastructure will take at least 3 to 5 years, so it will be a long time before their normal life can be restored. Our fellow countrymen in Sichuan desperately need our help.  We are the fortunate ones who are able to give so I strongly encourage we continue to make more donation to the quake fund.
